With two films accepted and premiering ( Fred and Carl are Park Rangers, and The Other Side of Charlie) this was a big year at the 2012 Silver Wave Film Festival to say the least. Both films screened Friday November 9th to an eager and receptive crowd with rave reviews. If that wasn't good enough we even took home a few awards.

Writer Ryan Griffith won the Lex Gigeroff Excellence in Screenwriting in a Short Comedy Award for Fred and Carl.

Only a few weeks in and 2012 it's already shaping up to be a big one for us.

First off we have a bit of a big announcement; our long time friend Joel Thompson has just joined SoftLight Studios. A seriously gifted filmmaker and philanthropist, Joel Thompson started out with just his families VHS camera and a vivid imagination, and from such humble beginnings has gone on to write, produce and direct a number of award winning and critically acclaimed films. Joel's passion for telling a good story and ultimately giving back to the community is a perfect match for SoftLight and we couldn't be happier to bring him on board.

2011 was a bit of a blur, with so many projects in post it's nice to be looking at a pre-production schedule again, this time it's for our first feature length film to produced under the SoftLight banner; Buddy Hoppy, a dramedy centering on a young man's last ditch attempt to save his father's legacy, while trying not to lose what little he has left.

If you've been keeping up with us, you've probably been wondering about or first project of 2011, The Other Side of Charlie (OSC), unfortunately the news of OSC comes with a sad bit of information regarding our friend and collaborator Lex Gigeroff, who passed away on Christmas last year. The whole film community is in shock regarding the loss of such a talented and giving artist, and this is basically leaving our film(which Lex was a big part of from script to screen) in a sort of limbo while we try to figure out how to finish it, as we know he would have wanted us to. Those in the Fredericton area reading this, there will be a memorial for Lex this Saturday the 21st at the Charlotte Street Arts Center.

To end on a bit of a lighter note, our TV pilot Fred and Carl are Park Rangers is just about completed. We're doing the final touches on the edit, then our sound guys will take over and we're looking to have a completed project by mid-February to add to our pitch. So wish us luck.

That's all for now, thanks for reading.

After the awards on Saturday evening the announcement will be made as to which film CBC has chosen for this years CBC 3-2-1 award(a funding award given out to up and coming filmmakers). Through our colleagues at Steam Powered Studios we applied with the before mentioned script The Midnight List. The excitement is certainly building, and our fingers are certainly crossed.
In fact, we're already well under way with pre-production due the demanding nature of this little script. We couldn't be happier to announce that our long time friend and collaborator Jon Blizzard will be once again producing for us, this time under the label of his production company: Steam Powered Studios. This script has been almost three years in the making, so to say we're excited is a bit of an understatement.

Here's a little concept poster I put together a while ago for it.

That's not it though...

I've finally completed my second feature length script!! Let Sleeping Dogs Lie. This is a unique, and special story that I can't wait to share with the world.

Not stopping there though, there's too many stories out there we want to tell, and after about a week or two away from Final Draft and I'll be diving into my next idea; more to come on that later.

Thanks for reading

As I type Greg is packing up to head to Vancouver to permanently set up our office there. We'll miss him on this end of things, but ultimately it's best for all of us, SoftLight included.

We're expecting to have The Other Side of Charlie, and Fred and Carl completed by the end of this year, and onto the festival circuit/out to networks.

In the meantime there's much more in the works creatively, and a big announcement coming from "our East coast division" for the beginning of September.

Thanks for reading, and stay tuned.

Proud to say we wrapped on time and believe it or not, under budget. We learned a lot and had a great time filming. Can't wait to see what Greg finds under all that footage.

Next up is a pilot we're producing for local writer Ryan Griffith titled "Fred and Carl: Are Park Rangers". With the momentum from Charlie we're already moving ahead with pre-production and will start casting in a few weeks, with hopes for shooting in mid-August.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2497520409188431510.post-91331957319586652912011-05-31T19:53:00.000-07:002011-05-31T19:57:11.974-07:001st Weekend of CharlieSo the first weekend did meet a bit of bump in the road, but only due to weather, pushing back our first scene on Friday to Saturday. It all worked out though and we managed to get some great footage Saturday afternoon and evening.

Sunday we filmed at The Cellar on campus at UNB. It's become a bit fo a tradition to film our bar scenes there now. Again, we got some really great stuff.
